Wed, 18 Aug 2010 11:12:00 -0700 Memories - objects - signs http://archblog.allhallowsleeds.org.uk/memories-objects-signs http://archblog.allhallowsleeds.org.uk/memories-objects-signs

Some of my most memorable recollections of All Hallows are Danny Hooks’ baptism at Pentecost this year and the Easter Day service when we saw the fox in the garden.

Among the objects that stand out the most to me are the circular cushions in the church and how I’d love to see them in new rainbow-coloured ones.

And about signs – well I can’t help thinking that the most important signs around are the ones that speak of love and care and compassion and generosity of spirit ...the ones that say the most about the Kingdom of God - and they are… us!

rules…lines…boundaries… so many of these signs seem to be telling us NOT to do things.

Others don’t give quite the message that was intended.

Some are quite pretty, subversive, or inventive.

I’ve been researching a new church noticeboard. What kind of “sign” is this?  What kind of signs do we have INSIDE the church?  Organising noticeboards is rather a frustrating job. TOO MUCH INFORMATION.  The Arch Project seems to be helping us to clear out and clear up, certainly at the moment with decorating going on.  A lot of rubbish has been cleared since Steve and Simon came!  I look forward to seeing the new ways in which we fill, re-create and enjoy our building!  Especially looking for signs, and considering the messages they give…

Wed, 11 Aug 2010 08:44:06 -0700 Memories, Stories & Local Shops http://archblog.allhallowsleeds.org.uk/memories-stories-local-shops http://archblog.allhallowsleeds.org.uk/memories-stories-local-shops Over the past month we have been gathering content for the next stage
of the creative process. What people kindly contribute will be our
inspiration in creating pieces for contemplation for the All Hallows
community. We have left notebooks and pens in the church inviting
those who use the building to share and gather memories and stories.

In July we invited local shopkeepers to contribute to the project. We
asked them to consider what it meant to be of service to the local
community, we photographed their shops and asked if we could
incorporate an object from their shop in the exhibition. Here are some
the comments made by the shopkeepers and a selection of photographs.

“It’s fun! We have regulars in and they have become like friends”
Murton Bakery

“I’ve been here 28 – 30 years. I’ve seen most of the people who come
to my shop grow up. The area has changed for the better, there’s more
diversity. I’ve run the post office for one year. It is different for
me, as I’ve not worked in a post office before. Because of the Post
Office we get older members of the community come into the shop as
originally it was mostly younger people - students, there are still
families here as well.”
Londis

“”It’s good for the public, good for people, good for the area. A lot
of local people come in and they are always welcome”
Quix

“ I’m a plumber and I know a lot about DIY, electrics, etc. I felt
that a lot of people in the area need help and advice with their DIY,
especially students and locals – so I opened this shop”

Fri, 11 Jun 2010 05:17:00 -0700 Parish Boundary Walk http://archblog.allhallowsleeds.org.uk/parish-boundary-walk http://archblog.allhallowsleeds.org.uk/parish-boundary-walk Join Linda and me for a walk along all or part of the Parish Boundary (weather permitting) on Sunday 18th July at 9.00 a.m. on our way to church!

I've just done a recce by bike and here's some thoughts:

PRIZE QUESTION:  Can you find a steep and secret stairway down to the only legal place to view most of the parish boundary which is on the River Aire? (You only see a part of it from the bridge in picture below. Star Bar or Timeout Bar to the first to answer where to find it (Clue: you have to leave the parish).

As an “incomer” to the parish and the church over the last ten years, I have ambivalent feelings about the parish. Do I take it for granted?  Do I really belong or have any right to be here?

I’ve just explored the boundary by bike and it was a fun adventure. I was a student around here many, many years ago, and I was confronted with this past, much of it forgotten!   A flat off Hyde Park Road, and another near the railway. Burley Rec, the river, temping in a warehouse on Kirkstall Road.  I love the sense of archaeology when following a theoretical line. Some features clearly still define that line, in other places it’s completely ignored as warehouses are plonked on top.  Was there a Tannery where a new company now use this name?   Having just been down to Oxfordshire, scrabbling around for evidence of my great-great grandfather who worked the wharf on the canal at Wantage, I found all evidence of this famous wharf now covered by flats and warehouses. I wonder what the area either side of Kirkstall Road would have looked like 200 years ago before the factories and TV studios?

So, yes, I do have some roots in the parish. I’m not a resident, but it has many associations, memories, and current resonances. I hope I don’t take it for granted, and I thoroughly recommend a boundary walk for opening one’s eyes to where we belong as members of All Hallows.

Fri, 28 May 2010 05:48:00 -0700 Just to keep everyone up to date with the Arch project: http://archblog.allhallowsleeds.org.uk/just-keep-everyone-up-to-date-with-the-arch-p http://archblog.allhallowsleeds.org.uk/just-keep-everyone-up-to-date-with-the-arch-p

  1. We have created an installation in the corridor space outside the chapel using photographs, drawn lines and text. This installation reveals the Parish boundary walk in terms of colour, texture, objects, viewpoints, text. The lines reflect the shape of buildings and landscape we came across along the walk. This exercise was about us exploring the area and the relationship between the boundary and the building. We’ve explored bringing the exterior into interior and by doing so invited people to have a sense of our walk and what can be found. This piece has animated an interior thoroughfare.
  2. The photographs we took of the objects look beautiful. We’ve displayed them in the corridor under the title of Objects of Ritual and Meaning. It’s a powerful piece of work because the objects, normally hidden from view, are there for all to see. These images through their colour and texture transform an otherwise empty space. Objects are an important element of this project as they play a significant role in the act of worship. Objects are important to all of us for many reasons and as part of animating the interior we have set up a large chalkboard upon which we invite people to write answers to questions. The first question was - ‘What object that you own has meaning to you?
  3. We have delivered two creative workshops to the church community. In them we explored themes such as the building, spirituality, faith and journey which resulted in discussion, made objects and movement.
  4. Out on the streets of Hyde Park we set up an engagement activity inviting passing students to draw on provided maps their regular routes through the area and share with us the places they liked and feared in Hyde Park. We had a very positive response and spoke to over forty students only two of whom said anything negative about the area.

Thu, 22 Apr 2010 01:52:18 -0700 ARCH HAS STARTED! http://archblog.allhallowsleeds.org.uk/arch-has-started http://archblog.allhallowsleeds.org.uk/arch-has-started Arch at All Hallows has started! We’re both very excited at being resident artists at All Hallows. We’ve been spending the past few weeks absorbing information about the church and the parish. We’ve:
• Walked the Parish boundary, (well as much as we can – some parts are inaccessible), photographing what we came across and documenting observations, thoughts and feelings we had
• Looked through old parish magazines that go back to the 1880’s to a time when this was part of the parish of St Simon’s, and by doing so we’re gaining an understanding of the social history of this area.
• Spent time in the church photographing various church artefacts and becoming familiar with the building. • Been meeting the people who use/belong to the building
• Had tea with the Buddhist meditation group • Attended the Sunday morning service and chatted over coffee with some of the members of the congregation. • Met with the group that oversees the ARCH project. This group is concerned with the ‘housekeeping’ of the project and keeping the PCC up-to-date with the progress of the project. Soon we’ll be installing some artwork in the building, which will give you some insight into the creative journey we’re on.

We feel privileged to be running ARCH here at All Hallows, however, we do require your participation and hope that you’ll feel inclined to join us and/or contribute to the creative process when the opportunities arise. We’ll be using a variety of methods to gather information. What you offer - your stories, memories and ideas are crucial to the success of this project. Simon & Trish
