Memories - objects - signs

Some of my most memorable recollections of All Hallows are Danny Hooks’ baptism at Pentecost this year and the Easter Day service when we saw the fox in the garden.

Among the objects that stand out the most to me are the circular cushions in the church and how I’d love to see them in new rainbow-coloured ones.

And about signs – well I can’t help thinking that the most important signs around are the ones that speak of love and care and compassion and generosity of spirit ...the ones that say the most about the Kingdom of God - and they are… us!

Parish Boundary walk: looking for a sign...

rules…lines…boundaries… so many of these signs seem to be telling us NOT to do things.

Others don’t give quite the message that was intended.

Some are quite pretty, subversive, or inventive.

I’ve been researching a new church noticeboard. What kind of “sign” is this?  What kind of signs do we have INSIDE the church?  Organising noticeboards is rather a frustrating job. TOO MUCH INFORMATION.  The Arch Project seems to be helping us to clear out and clear up, certainly at the moment with decorating going on.  A lot of rubbish has been cleared since Steve and Simon came!  I look forward to seeing the new ways in which we fill, re-create and enjoy our building!  Especially looking for signs, and considering the messages they give…

Memories, Stories & Local Shops

Over the past month we have been gathering content for the next stage
of the creative process. What people kindly contribute will be our
inspiration in creating pieces for contemplation for the All Hallows
community. We have left notebooks and pens in the church inviting
those who use the building to share and gather memories and stories.

In July we invited local shopkeepers to contribute to the project. We
asked them to consider what it meant to be of service to the local
community, we photographed their shops and asked if we could
incorporate an object from their shop in the exhibition. Here are some
the comments made by the shopkeepers and a selection of photographs.

“It’s fun! We have regulars in and they have become like friends”
Murton Bakery

“I’ve been here 28 – 30 years. I’ve seen most of the people who come
to my shop grow up. The area has changed for the better, there’s more
diversity. I’ve run the post office for one year. It is different for
me, as I’ve not worked in a post office before. Because of the Post
Office we get older members of the community come into the shop as
originally it was mostly younger people - students, there are still
families here as well.”
Londis

“”It’s good for the public, good for people, good for the area. A lot
of local people come in and they are always welcome”
Quix

“ I’m a plumber and I know a lot about DIY, electrics, etc. I felt
that a lot of people in the area need help and advice with their DIY,
especially students and locals – so I opened this shop”
